Artificial Insemination (IUI) in Colombia
Artificial Insemination (Intrauterine Insemination - IUI) is a gentle, natural first-line fertility treatment. By placing washed and concentrated sperm directly inside the uterus at the moment of ovulation, the journey of sperm to the egg is significantly shortened and assisted.
Medical Criteria & Advantages
When is IUI Recommended?
- Couples with unexplained infertility of less than 3 years duration.
- Women under 35-37 years of age with verified bilateral tubal patency (open fallopian tubes).
- Mild male factor infertility (moderate alterations in sperm count or motility).
- Cervical factor infertility (hostile or thick cervical mucus preventing sperm passage).
- Ovulatory disorders (such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - PCOS) responsive to mild stimulation.
- Single women or female couples utilizing certified donor sperm.
Advantages of IUI
- Simple, low-complexity, non-invasive outpatient procedure.
- Cost-effective with low medication dosage requirements and fewer clinic monitoring visits.
- No sedation or anesthesia required: performed in a standard consultation suite.
- Performed directly in the uterine cavity at the exact biological moment of ovulation.
Stages of Intrauterine Insemination
Baseline Assessment & Tubal Patency Confirmation
Evaluation of ovarian reserve and confirmation of open fallopian tubes via hysterosalpingography (HSG) or HyFoSy, alongside semen analysis.
Mild Ovarian Stimulation
Low-dose oral or injectable medications gently stimulate the ovaries to produce 1 or 2 mature follicles, monitored via ultrasound.
Ovulation Triggering
When the leading follicle reaches 18–20 mm, an hCG injection is administered to schedule exact ovulation 36 hours later.
Sperm Preparation (Sperm Capacitation)
The partner or donor semen sample is washed, filtered, and concentrated in our andrology lab to isolate the most motile sperm.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Using a thin, flexible catheter, the concentrated sperm is gently placed directly inside the uterine cavity. The procedure takes 10 minutes and is painless.
